The year 2012 is approaching and many hundreds of thousands of people around the world believe that big changes will occur on this date. Some say it will be the end of the world, others believe it will be a time of transition. There are a number of different theories that people suggest will happen in 2012: earth changes, galactic alignment, massive solar storms, Planet x, arrival of extra-terrestrial life forms, not least to mention the end of the world!
1. Earth Changes: It is often talked about that in 2012 the Earth will undergo massive planetary changes. The most common put forward theory is that the will be a form of polar shift. This occurs when the magnetic North Pole and magnetic South Pole completely change positions.
There are scientists who say our planet had a pole shift event approximately 780, 000 years before. If this was to happen again then the results would be devastating on a massive scale. There would be the biggest ever earthquakes experienced by man, mega tsunamis, and the eruption of super volcanoes that would create nuclear winters.
2. Galactic Equinox: It is commonly accepted that every object in the universe has a number of cycles. For example we all know about the two solstices and two equinoxes that we experience on Earth annually. We calculate these through the planet’s movement around the sun. But are you aware that the whole of our Solar System is also moving in a cycle in the galaxy.
It is believed that in 2012, and specifically on the Northern Hemisphere’s winter solstice (Dec 21), our Solar System will be exactly aligned with the galaxy’s centre or equinox point. This cycle lasts for 25, 800 years. The results of being aligned in this manner are difficult to quantify, we can only speculate. It is believed that the Galactic Equinox has relevance to the end of the Mayan long count calendar.
3. Massive Solar Storms: Our sun is an incredibly active star. It constantly gives off flares some of which are powerful enough to cause disruption to the electro magnetic fields on our planet. NASA is predicting that there will be a strong solar maximum event that is likely to occur around the year 2012. This may result in massive failures to all forms of modern communication as satellites and power grids can be knocked out of service.
4. Planet X: This is one theory that many people have been talking about. It involves the Earth coming extremely close to a planet that is not yet visible. This planet is often called Planet X, Wormwood, or Niburu. Believers say that it is on a huge elliptical orbit that only passes close to our planet once every 6000 years. They back up their claims through interpretations of ancient tablets that were carved during the Sumerian culture of the Middle East. If it is true then the earth will become unrecognizable.
5. Contact with Extra Terrestrial life: Some people believe that 2012 is when we as a race will have our first true contact with intelligent life forms that are from outside our solar system. This theory is only speculation!
